This is a guest article from David Buse a long time resident of the Los Alcázares area.
Tapas Around Los Alcázares
For tapas I would recommend the Complejo Deportivo Municipal, yes the little restaurant at the Sports Centre in my, and many others opinion, does the best tapas in town and an excellent Menu del Día for lunchtimes only.
La Tropical in the centre of the old town serves very good tapas and is also a full menu restaurant where you can enjoy your food al fresco or in its atmospheric restaurant area decorated with a photo mural of by-gone.
Los Ramons on the main road to town is one of Los Alcázare’s oldest restaurants serving primarily Spanish cuisine from excellent tapas to sea food including lubina (sea bass) cooked in salt.
El Chato also on the main road has a warm atmosphere in which to try a more imaginative slant on Spanish food along with wines from all regions of Spain.
In the opposite direction from the old town from Mercadona Square are a few restaurants of note:
The Ghurkha Durbar is probably the best traditional style Indian restaurant at the moment offering all the old favourites plus some Nepalese specialities.
Now Oasis Boulevard isn’t my favourite place even after a coat of paint and a new sign but a diamond will shine out of a pile of coal and two restaurants and a bar are well worth a visit.
The Arches Bar for its weekly entertainment, The Pizzeria La Sombra for some of the best pizza to be had anywhere.
The ‘Jewel in its Crown’ has to be the Restaurante Bacchus run by a delightful Swedish couple, he cooks and she looks after you as if she was your favourite auntie. Great food, a relaxing ambience and favoured by many for that special occasion. One small word of warning they don’t take credit or debit cards so be sure that you have both cash and a good appetite before you go.
Eating in The Los Alcázares Area
Two places worth a mention La Casa del Reloj (Clock house) Restaurant in San Pedro del Pinatar. This impressive building, in old colonial style, features many antique filled rooms and an internal patio for the warmer weather. Best suited for more formal occasions it also has comfy bars with sofas for pre dinner drinks or after dinner coffee.
Finally I had to mention Sunday lunch at the Restaurante Meson Galindo in a village called La Pueblo between Los Alcázares and Cartagena. The Menu del Día is always worth a visit for but if you want to experience the real Spain book a table after 2 pm on any Sunday for an amazing experience. Four starters, a choice of Caldero the fish/rice dish of Murcia, Gratinated Cod, Roast Knuckle of Pork, Barbecued Ribs or Roast loin with pepper sauce followed by dessert with bread, wine and coffee included, price as of writing €10 including IVA.
Well there is a short introduction on what Los Alcázares has to offer and this doesn’t include all the beach bars and restaurants along the Paseo Maritímo many of which serve food, so enjoy you food and your stay in one of the best kept secrets in Spain, our lovely little town Los Alcázares.
