caravacca-viewoftownLooking for some cool free things to do in Murcia, Spain this year? Then take a look at my top five free things to do in Murcia…

  1. Visit a fiesta – there are loads of free fiestas to visit with the family. Try Bando de la Huerta in Springtime, where the whole of Murcia city is turned into a party, with music, dancing, floats and plenty to eat and drink.  There’s Carnaval which is celebrated around the whole region, take a look at our Carnaval in Murcia article for some ideas on Carnaval in Cartagena or Lorca. Try out your local village fiesta where there will usually be dancers, floats, horses, free food (and sometimes drink) and activities spread out through (often) a week long period – ask in the local bars when your fiesta patronale is celebrated.
  2. Enjoy the Mar Menor – there’s so much to do for free around the Mar Menor in Murcia, it’s difficult to know where to start! Watch the sailing boats from many of the little ports as they float out across this inland sea. At Lo Pagan marvel at the crazy kite surfers catching air. Enjoy a magnificent sun set or sun rise looking out across the two seas, dos mares, from any of the interesting small towns – San Pedro del Pinatar, Los Alcázares, San Javier, Los Nietos… If you’re lucky you’ll catch the Patrulla Águilas planes flying over and get a fantastic airshow for free too!
  3. Take a hike – Murcia is a wonderful location for a relaxing stroll or a more serious hike. Try the Sierra Espuña Parque Regional with some of the highest peaks in the Murcia region (Espuña mountain at 1585m) or the highest mountain in the Murcia region, Los Obispos at 2027m in the Moratalla area.  Of course there are hundreds of kilometres of coastal paths to enjoy – the Calblanque regional park is a great place to start – it’s quiet and rugged. And finally what about making your hike a little more challenging by having a go at geocaching!
  4. Go window shopping – it’s easy to do some fun shopping in Murcia, from the large shopping centres to old style family shops, from the craft markets to trendy retail outlets. On a rainy day (yes there are a few in Murcia!) visit one of the large shopping centres found around the Murcia area.  For a more leisurely stroll try the city centres of Murcia or Cartagena, where you can pick up some designer wear. Or look out for the markets around the Murcia area: as well as the regular weekly market days there are special artisan and medieval markets where you can find traditional products such as sausages, salted meats, pickles, honey, artisan bread, homemade sweets, cheeses and liqueurs. There are also craftsmen who restore furniture, carvers and turners, jewellery, crystal carvings, etc.
  5. Visit the interior – get away from the beaches and the touristy areas and have a wander around some of the most beautiful villages and towns in the interior of Murcia. There’s the Sierra Espuña Parque Regional, the wine towns of Yecla and Jumilla in the North East, the Ricote Valley area with the Sierra de la Pila and over to the far North West there’s Caravacca de la Cruz and Moratalla. All of these places are great for a walk around the medieval towns, people watching in the beautiful squares or catching up on your cultural activities. You’ll find mountains, rivers, castles, watermills, bodegas and friendly curious locals.

What else have you found to do in the Murcia area that’s free?
